Is CELPIP Easier Than IELTS?

Neither test is officially easier — but they reward different strengths. Here's what actually differs on test day.

Speaking: no human examiner

CELPIP Speaking is recorded via microphone with strict timers — less intimidating for many, but you get no clarification or human cues. IELTS Speaking is a live interview where you can ask the examiner to repeat a question.

Writing: spell checker and typing

CELPIP Writing is typed with a basic spell checker enabled — a real advantage if your handwriting is slow or messy. Paper IELTS is handwritten, and illegible answers lose marks.

Accents: Canadian vs international

CELPIP Listening uses Canadian/North American accents only. IELTS mixes British, Australian, and other accents. If you live in Canada, CELPIP audio typically feels more familiar.

Score thresholds are not symmetric

At CLB 8, CELPIP needs 8 in each skill, but IELTS needs Listening 7.5 (vs 6.5 elsewhere). Some test-takers strategically pick the test whose per-skill thresholds match their strengths.

One sitting vs two

CELPIP is completed in a single ~3-hour sitting. IELTS Speaking is often scheduled separately from the other three sections, which some find less tiring — and others find inconvenient.

Which Test Is Accepted Where?

For Canadian immigration the two are interchangeable. Beyond that, acceptance diverges. Unsure which CELPIP version you need? See CELPIP-General vs LS.
