I want to tell you about a trip I took with my friends to a lake last summer. It was very nice and I remember it very well. We drove for about three hours to get there. When we arrived, we put up our tents near the water. The weather was sunny and warm. We went swimming in the lake and the water was very cold but it was fun. After that we made a fire and cooked some food outside. I felt very happy because we were all laughing and having a good time. It was nice to be away from the city and just relax with my friends. We took many photos together. I think that was one of the best trips I ever had. I want to do it again next summer.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the most frequent errors that hold test-takers back in Task 2.

Not using past tenses consistently

Switching between present and past tense mid-story, which confuses the listener and signals weak grammar control.

Stick to simple past (went, saw, felt) as your default. Use past continuous (was walking) for background actions and past perfect (had never seen) for earlier events.

Being too vague or general

Saying 'it was nice' or 'we had fun' without any specific details that bring the story to life.

Add one concrete detail per event: what you saw, heard, smelled, or felt physically. 'The water was freezing' beats 'it was cold.'

Listing events without elaboration

Giving a dry sequence β€” 'We went here, then here, then here' β€” without pausing to describe or reflect on any moment.

Focus on 2–3 key moments instead of trying to cover everything. Develop each one with a sensory detail or emotional reaction.

Not expressing feelings or reflection

Telling what happened but never saying how you felt about it or why it mattered. This limits your score on content and cohesion.

Dedicate 10–15 seconds to feelings and lessons. Use phrases like 'What really struck me was...' or 'I realized at that moment that...'

Pro Tips for a High Score

Strategies used by test-takers who consistently score CLB 9 and above on Task 2.

Pick ONE specific memory

Don't try to summarize an entire vacation. Choose a single moment β€” one afternoon, one conversation, one surprise β€” and build your story around it.

Use time markers for narrative flow

Words like 'first,' 'after a while,' 'by the time we left,' and 'looking back' create a sense of progression and make your story easy to follow.

Include sensory details

Describe what you saw, heard, smelled, or tasted. 'The campfire crackled and the air smelled like pine' is far more engaging than 'it was a nice night.'

End with a reflection, not just a summary

Instead of 'That was my trip,' say what you learned or why the memory stays with you. Reflection demonstrates higher-level language and critical thinking.
