Sample Prompt

β€œDescribe what is happening in this picture.”

The picture shows a busy farmers' market on a sunny morning with vendors selling produce, flowers, and prepared foods. Customers are browsing stalls and families are eating at picnic tables.

In this picture, I can see a busy farmers' market on a sunny morning. There are many people walking around and looking at things. In the middle of the picture, a woman is buying some vegetables from a man at a table. She is holding a bag and pointing at some tomatoes. On the left side, there is another table with fruits like apples and oranges. In the background, I can see more tables and some trees. There are also some people sitting and eating food. On the right side, there is a man selling flowers. The atmosphere looks happy and busy. It seems like a nice day and people are enjoying their time at the market.

Key Features at This Level

  • βœ“Basic spatial language (in the middle, on the left, in the background)
  • βœ“Simple present continuous tense used correctly
  • βœ“Adequate vocabulary for everyday objects
  • βœ“Description covers main areas but lacks specific detail

Common Mistakes vs. Best Practices

Common Mistakes

  • Narrating instead of describing

β€œThe woman went to the market and bought tomatoes.” β€” This tells a story in past tense instead of describing what you see right now.

  • Ignoring background details

Only describing the center of the picture and skipping the background, edges, and smaller elements that show vocabulary range.

  • No spatial prepositions

β€œThere is a man. There is a table. There are flowers.” β€” Without location words, the description lacks coherence and structure.

  • Rushing through the description

Finishing in 30 seconds and leaving 30 seconds of silence. Aim to fill the full 60 seconds with relevant detail.

Best Practices

  • Scan the entire picture first

Use your 30-second prep time to mentally divide the picture into zones: center, left, right, foreground, and background.

  • Use location words systematically

Move through the picture in order: foreground to background, or left to right. This creates a natural flow for the listener.

  • Describe actions and expressions

Go beyond objects. Say what people are doing (present continuous) and how they appear to feel. This demonstrates vocabulary depth.

  • End with atmosphere or mood

A strong closing about the mood shows you can go beyond literal description and interpret the scene at a higher level.
