General Reading Strategies

Read questions before the passage

Spending 30-60 seconds reading the questions first tells you what to look for. When you then read the passage, relevant information jumps out instead of blending into the background. This is the single most effective reading strategy.

Use process of elimination

For every question, try to eliminate at least two answer choices before selecting your answer. Wrong answers often contain words from the passage but distort the meaning, are too extreme ("always," "never"), or describe something not mentioned in the text.

Do not over-read
